I was very impressed with the event from before it even started. Nick made sure he emailed me the day before to make sure I was happy with the information I had, and then called me on the day to check a technicality. Nick was early to the meet-up, and was very personable. Despite the day being rainy, and permanently overcast, it actually lent itself to B&W photography. He suggested some settings, and also that we shoot in B&W out of the camera (rather than applying in post), and this was a revelation. I'd always shot in colour and then desaturated, but actually, shooting in B&W means that photos you may have thrown away if they were colour actually looked pretty good in B&W on the screen. Nick ran the couple of hours very well, and although we had a small group, it was still a lot of fun. We met up periodically to review the 'best' photos we'd taken on his tablet, and he offered suggestions to improve the shot. All in all, very happy with the day, and it's really opened my eyes to B&W photography

I use weather apps and identified that there was likely to be mist in the early morning the next day. Fforest Fawr is one of my local woodlands and so it was an obvious place to go in search of the fog. I wasn't disappointed when I got there at 5.30am. It is sometimes difficult to find "clean" woodland compositions as there is always a lot going on. The fog helps to mask many of the distracting elements in a woodland scene. I also used a long lens (70-300mm) to isolate small scenes like this one
